Thiripuradhigal Samharam (Thiripuram Yerithal)

The bravery act of Thiripura samharam by Lord Shiva took place at Thiru Adhigai Veeratam near Cuddalore.  And the varalaru comes below.
Thiripura Samharam

There were 3 Asuras named Kamalakshan, Vidhunmaali and Tharagakshan. They performed thavam towards Brahma to get the boon of immortality. Brahma appeared before them and told them that he cannot give the boon of immortality and asked them to pray towards Lord Shiva. On hearing this they started vigorous thavam towards Lord Shiva for many years. The Lord Shiva also appeared before them one day and asked them what they want from him on return to their prayers.
They asked the Lord for flying forts, one in Gold other in Silver and the third in iron for three of them to reside and rule. And then they asked for the boon of immortality. Lord Shiva told them, that anyone born in the earth has to die some day. But they can ask for how they want to die or how their death should happen. Then they stated their condition of death to be as, “When all the three flying forts come in one straight line in air, the person who has got powers equal to you must kill us with only one single arrow “. Lord Shiva smiled and gave them the boon they asked and went back to Kailash.

Proof in Sundarar’s kachi thevaram “திரியும் முப்புரம் தீப்பிழம் பாகச் ……..”
They went to their forts and started flying in air with their asura kingdom inside it. They worshipped Lord Shiva dedicatedly and everyone one of them in the kingdom also worshipped Lord Shiva only. But those forts always kept flying in the air making nuisance to the people on the earth. Rishis, Animals and other humans are also disturbed by these three forts continuously flying above the earth. And in arrogance of their strength those three asuras started troubling devargal in deva logam too.

The worried devas go to Brahma and then to Vishnu to save them. But they are helpless saying that the boon has been given by the Lord Shiva himself and they will not be able to do anything in this case. And all went to Lord Shiva himself and stated their condition caused by these three asuras and pleaded to protect them from those asuras. The Lord said to them that he will not be able to do anything to them unless they stop worshipping him. So with this clue Vishnu called everyone and asked his devotee saint Narada to go to those asuras to change their bhakthi from Lord Shiva.

Narada brainwashes those three asuras stating that they themselves are very strong enough and equal to God with their powers of immortality. Also tells them that they are one to be worshipped and not anybody else.  The three of them gets into the trap of Narada and stops worshipping Lord Shiva. Not only stopping with this they also asks everyone in their kingdom to stop Shiva pooja and worship themselves. And in fear their entire kingdom ceased shiva pooja and started worshipping the asuras. But there were three persons named Sudharman, Sushilan and Subhukthi in those three forts respectively, who never stopped the Shiva pooja and kept worshipping Lord Shiva secretly.

Now the devas, Brahma & Vishnu went back to Lord Shiva to save them as they ceased Shiva pooja. Lord Shiva accepted and they started for the samharam. All of them said to Lord Shiva that they would help him in the process of finishing them off. So the videgam becomes chariot, the four Vedas becomes four horses, Brahma becomes the saradhi, Suryan & chandran becomes the two tyres. Agni, Vishu and Vayu become the arrow as the sharp head, body, and tail part respectively. Meru hill becomes bow and the great snake vasuki becomes string for the bow. And the plan was that, with this bow and arrow the Lord Shiva will kill them when they come in straight line. And when these where happening all the devas, Bramha and Vishnu just thinks in anavam (the 'I' factor) that how would it have been possible for Lord Shiva to kill those asuras without their help.

The great Lord Shiva knows, what all souls or anmas think in their minds. He just smiles in thinking the childishness of devas and others. When he laughed it changed as fire bringing the three forts in one line and burnt them all in a second into ashes. Not only are the forts burnt but the three persons, Sudharman, Sushilan and Subhukthi are also protected alive from the disaster even while they are inside the fort when it got burnt. This shows the greatness of Lord Shiva and the greatness of his Shiva pooja. Thus the Shivaperuman did the bravery act or Veera seyal of burning the forts or Thiripura Samharam. Also out of those three one becomes Shiva ganam to beat the instrument Muzhavu while Lord Shiva dances and the other two becomes the Dwarapalaga or the gate keepers for this abode Kailash.

Though this Veera Cheyal is performed in Kailash the moorthi of this bravery is considered to be at Thiru Adhigai Veeratam only. Thus the Thiripura Samharam ends here. The temple in Thiru Adhigai Veeratam is itself built like a chariot to commemorate the chariot that Shiva had ridden on for the Tripura Samharam.
Thiruchittrambalam!
